> Pneumococcal disease
Pneumococcus is a type of bacteria that can cause pneumonia and meningitis, is a leading cause of serious illness in adults and children throughout the world.

Each year in the United States, there are an estimated 175,000 hospitalized cases of pneumococcal pneumonia and 3,000 to 6,000 cases of meningitis.

Pneumococcal disease, usually spread by coughing and sneezing, is the most common bacterial infection of children in the U.S., causing about 1,400 cases of meningitis, 17,000 cases of bloodstream infections, and 71,000 cases of pneumonia every year in children under 5.

There are vaccines for those individuals at high risk of infection (children, adults over age 65, and individuals with serious medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, sickle cell, and cancer). Although it can help prevent severe illness, it is not guaranteed to prevent all symptoms in all individuals.

In recent years, pneumococcal strains resistant to one commonly used antibiotic have surfaced, making treatment difficult and increasing the need for further prevention through vaccination.

Coastal Carolina Research Center has conducted many clinical trials over the past 10 years, including several pertaining to pneumococcal disease. We run ongoing clinical trials for pneumococcal disease during the year. Our clinical trials include study-related free health care and monetary compensation for each participant.

If you are interested in being considered for one of our pneumococcal disease studies in the future please click here to submit your interest, and the next pneumococcal clinical study we obtain we promise to contact you.
